We see broken people becoming whole, through the love of Christ. To build a community in which to belong, grow and serve. To love our neighbours by helping them overcome spiritual and physical needs. To contribute to Spirit-filled transformation in the city of Guelph.
Back in Chapter 4, the beginning of the story about Jesus calming the storm tells us that in the evening, Jesus told the disciples that they should cross to the “other side.” More than just a geographical lesson, “the other side” meant “the other side of the tracks.” They were not just crossing the sea, they were crossing all sorts of social and cultural boundaries as well! This is the first cross-cultural missions trip in the New Testament!
When we pause for a moment and build the scene, these are the things that stand out. First, it was likely dark or getting dark. Remember that the disciples departed in the evening before the storm rocked them. Second, we are told the demon possessed man lived in the tombs, so the disciples have landed somewhere near the tombs. Not only is this spooky at night, but tombs were unclean in Jewish law. Merely touching a tomb by accident made you ceremonially unclean!
Third, there is a herd of pigs nearby as well. Remember, to Jews, pigs were unclean animals! So we immediately know that this is not Jewish territory! Finally, in our final verse, we are told that the man who was healed went and testified in the Decapolis. This was a group of 10 Gentile cities in the area. What immediately becomes clear is that this is not where good Jewish men visit!
