We see broken people becoming whole, through the love of Christ. To build a community in which to belong, grow and serve. To love our neighbours by helping them overcome spiritual and physical needs. To contribute to Spirit-filled transformation in the city of Guelph.
One of my favourite movies is “The Princess Bride.” The main element driving the plot is that the heroine, named Buttercup, is going to marry the evil prince because she believes her “true love,” Wesley, died at sea years before. Wesley was not, in fact dead, but had become “the dread Pirate Roberts.” It is a swashbuckling story of heroes and villains. One of the most famous parts of the movie is the wedding ceremony between the evil prince and Buttercup. The “impressive clergyman” performing the wedding, has a speech impediment, but begins the wedding ceremony, “Mowage. Mowage is what bwings us togever today. Wuv, true wuv, a dweam within a dweam!”
Marriage is a wonderful thing. It is a tremendous opportunity for Christian couples to learn what agape love, self-giving love is all about! But, as we all know, we live in a world broken and scarred by sin. There is so much in this world that God created and made beautiful, but our sinfulness has corrupted and damaged. Marriage is certainly an example of how something God intended to be wonderful has been scarred by sin. Far too often, the sinfulness of the individuals in the marriage rears its ugly head and there is conflict, rancour and anger. Sometimes this leads to divorce. Divorce was not part of God’s original design for marriage, just as sickness and death were never God’s original design for human beings.
